Muda Lawal's Club Journey
Before becoming a football star, Muda Lawal worked as a car mechanic! His amazing football skills were soon noticed. In 1975, he joined Shooting Stars F.C. in Ibadan. He played for this club for many years, becoming a very important player.
In 1976, Muda helped the Shooting Stars win their first big international trophy. They won the African Cup Winners Cup. This was a huge moment because they were the first Nigerian team ever to win a continental title! Later, in 1985, the club was temporarily stopped by a military governor. But Muda returned to the team four seasons later, not just as a player, but also as an assistant coach.
Playing for Nigeria: International Career
Muda Lawal started playing for the Nigerian national team in 1975. He played in an amazing 86 matches for his country and scored 12 goals. He holds a special record: he is the only player in Africa to have played in five African Nations Cup tournaments in a row! These tournaments were held from 1976 to 1984.
Muda was a key player when Nigeria won its first ever African Nations Cup title in 1980. This was a historic victory for the country! The team also competed in the Summer Olympics in the same year. Muda played his last international match for Nigeria on August 18, 1985. It was a qualifying game for the 1986 African Cup of Nations, where Nigeria played against Zambia.
Legacy and Remembrance
Muda Lawal passed away at his home in 1991. To honor his great contributions to football, the Ashero Stadium in his hometown of Abeokuta was named after him. This shows how much he was loved and respected.
