The Mueller River is a small but interesting river located in the West Coast Region of New Zealand's South Island. It's known for its beautiful surroundings, as its entire journey takes place within a famous national park.

Where the Mueller River Flows

The Mueller River starts its journey high up in the mountains. Its source is in the magnificent Southern Alps, a long mountain range that runs down the spine of New Zealand's South Island. These mountains are known for their stunning peaks and glaciers.

The River's Path

From its mountain source, the Mueller River generally flows towards the north. It travels for about 17 kilometres (which is about 10.5 miles). This makes it a relatively short river compared to some of the world's giants.

Joining Another River

The Mueller River doesn't flow directly into the sea. Instead, it joins another river called the Turnbull River. This meeting point is about 14 kilometres (or 8.7 miles) before the Turnbull River itself reaches the ocean. Rivers often join together, forming larger waterways as they make their way to the sea.

Part of a National Park

One of the most special things about the Mueller River is that its entire length is inside Mount Aspiring National Park. This park is a huge protected area, famous for its wild mountains, glaciers, river valleys, and native forests.

Why National Parks are Important

National parks like Mount Aspiring are very important. They help protect nature, including rivers, plants, and animals. They also offer amazing places for people to explore and enjoy the outdoors, like hiking, camping, and sightseeing. Being part of such a park means the Mueller River's natural beauty is kept safe for everyone to enjoy.
