Muisca mythology tells us about the ancient beliefs of the Muisca people. They lived in what is now Colombia. We know about their myths from old writings by Muisca scholars and Spanish explorers. These explorers, called conquistadores, first met the Muisca in the 1530s.

Muisca Mythology: Ancient Stories of Colombia

Before the Spanish arrived, the Muisca Confederation was full of amazing stories. These myths explain how their world began. They also tell about the first leaders of their main cities, Hunza and Bacatá. These leaders were said to be descendants of mythical beings. Other famous Muisca myths include the legend of El Dorado and the Monster of Lake Tota.

Amazing Mythical Creatures

Old writers, called chroniclers, wrote down stories about many Muisca mythical creatures:

  • Idacansás: This was a legendary priest from Sogamoso. People believed he could change how things worked.
  • Goranchacha: A mythical leader, or cacique, who moved the northern Muisca capital. He moved it from Ramiriquí to Hunza.
  • Pacanchique: According to myths, he rescued his fiancée Azay from another ruler. He also helped the Spanish find a palace.
  • Hunzahúa: He was the first zaque (ruler) of Hunza.
  • Meicuchuca: He was the first zipa (ruler) of Bacatá. One story says one of his wives turned into a snake.

Other Cool Muisca Myths

The Muisca people had many other interesting myths:

  • El Dorado: This means "the golden one" or "the golden city." It was a big reason why the Spanish explored Colombia. El Dorado was not just a myth. It was a real Muisca ceremony. A new leader would cover himself in gold dust and offer gold to the gods in a lake. The Muisca raft, a golden artwork found in Pasca, shows this ceremony.
  • Monster of Lake Tota: People believed a huge snake or fish lived in Lake Tota.
  • Hunzahúa Well: This well was said to have formed from spilled chicha. Chicha is a traditional drink.
  • Fura and Tena: These were the first man and woman created by the god Are. They were meant to fill the Earth with people. They lost their special power to live forever. So, they grew old and passed away. Are felt sad for them. He turned them into strong rocky cliffs. These cliffs are protected from storms. Fura's tears became beautiful emeralds.
