George Isaac "Mule" Armstrong was a talented baseball player. He was a catcher in the Negro Leagues for several years. These leagues were important baseball organizations for African American players. They existed before the main Negro National League was formed.
Early Baseball Days
Mule Armstrong was born on July 28, 1885. He started his baseball career with the Buxton Wonders. This team was a traveling team from Buxton, Iowa. Traveling teams played games in many different towns.
In 1910, Mule Armstrong joined the St. Paul Colored Gophers. He played as a catcher for this team. He stayed with them for two seasons. In 1911, the team changed its name. They became known as the Twin Cities Gophers.
Moving to New Teams
In 1912, Mule Armstrong moved to a new team. He joined the French Lick Plutos in Indiana. Other players like Dicta Johnson also joined this team.
The next year, in 1913, Armstrong moved again. He joined the Chicago Giants. He played alongside another great player, Bingo DeMoss, on this team. Mule Armstrong played baseball for several years. He was an important part of the Negro Leagues' history.
