Mullet Key is a special historic island located near Crystal River, Florida. It sits about 3 miles south of the main opening of the Crystal River. This island was once home to Native American people long before Christopher Columbus arrived in the Americas.

Ancient Life on Mullet Key
People lived on Mullet Key for a long time, from about the year 500 to 1500. Two main groups of Native Americans, known as the Deptford and Safety Harbor cultures, called this island home. They left behind clues about their lives.

One of the most interesting things found on Mullet Key are large piles of Oyster shells. These piles are called shell middens.
