Mumford, Missouri facts for kids
Mumford is a small place in Greene County, Missouri. It's called an "unincorporated community" because it doesn't have its own local government, like a city or town does. Instead, it's part of the larger county.
This community is located where two small streams, Jones Branch and Pierson Creek, meet. It's about 1.3 miles east of the main U.S. 65 highway that goes around the east side of Springfield. A railway line, which used to be the St. Louis–San Francisco Railway and is now the BNSF Railway, passes just southwest of Mumford. Long ago, a school called Mt. Pisgah School was located just north of this area.
The Story of Mumford
Mumford once had its own post office. A post office is where people send and receive mail. This post office opened in 1887. It helped people in the community send letters and packages. The post office stayed open for many years, until 1924.
The community of Mumford got its name from the person who originally owned the land where it was built. This was a common way for small places to get their names back then.
