What Makes Mundesley Cliffs Special?
Mundesley Cliffs is like a giant history book made of rock. The cliffs here show some of the best examples of ancient layers of earth. These layers were formed by both the sea and freshwater rivers a very long time ago.
Layers from Ancient Times
These special layers of rock and soil tell us about two important periods in Earth's history. They show us what the world was like during the Cromerian interglacial period. An "interglacial" is a warm time between two ice ages.
The Anglian Ice Age
The cliffs also show us the very beginning of the Anglian glaciation. This was a super cold period when huge sheets of ice, called glaciers, covered much of the land. This ice age started around 478,000 years ago! By studying these cliffs, scientists can learn a lot about how our planet's climate has changed over hundreds of thousands of years.
Visiting Mundesley Cliffs
The beach at Mundesley Cliffs is open to the public. You can visit and see these amazing cliffs for yourself. It's a great place to learn about geology and enjoy the beautiful Norfolk coastline.
