The Mungo River is a cool river found in the West Coast Region of New Zealand's South Island. It's super important because it's one of the main starting points for the bigger Hokitika River. Imagine it as a smaller stream that grows up to become a major river!

Where is the Mungo River?

This river starts high up in the amazing Southern Alps. These mountains are like the backbone of New Zealand's South Island. From there, the Mungo River flows mostly towards the west.

Its Journey to the Sea

As the Mungo River travels, it eventually meets up with other waters and officially becomes the Hokitika River. This happens when the river makes a turn towards the north. It flows through a special gap in the Diedrichs Range of mountains.

River Connections

There's a place called the Hokitika Saddle. This saddle is like a natural dividing line. It separates the very beginnings of the Mungo River from the start of another big river system, the Rakaia River. The Rakaia River flows all the way to the east coast of the South Island. So, the Mungo River helps connect the west side of the island to the east through its water systems!
