About Coahuila's Municipalities

What Are Municipalities?

Municipalities in Coahuila are like local governments. They have their own power to make decisions, as stated in Mexico's constitution. Every three years, people in a municipality vote for a leader called a municipal president. This president leads a group of elected officials called the municipal council.

What Do Municipalities Do?

The municipal council is in charge of many important public services. These include providing water, street lights, and keeping people safe. They also manage traffic and take care of public parks, gardens, and cemeteries. Sometimes, they help the state and federal governments with things like education, emergency services, and protecting the environment. Since 1984, municipalities can collect taxes and fees. However, they get most of their money from the state and federal governments.
