Who Were the Muringura People?
The Muringura were a distinct group with their own traditions and way of life. Over time, their group became part of the larger Murrinh-Patha community. This means that their culture and language blended with the Murrinh-Patha people.
Where Did They Live?
The Muringura people lived in a specific area of the Northern Territory. Their traditional lands covered about 800 square miles (which is about 2,072 square kilometers). This area was located east of the Macadam Range. It also stretched along the swampy coast near the mouth of the Fitzmaurice River. Their northern boundary was near the Moyle River.
Their Language and Culture
The Muringura people spoke their own special language, or "dialect." Even though their group joined with the Murrinh-Patha, some parts of the Muringura language can still be found in the speech of their descendants today. This shows how important language is to a group's identity and history.
