Murray Barracks (Chinese: 美利兵房) was a special place in Hong Kong where the British Army soldiers lived and worked. It was like a military base. This barracks was located in an area called Admiralty, right in the heart of Central.

The barracks was named after Sir George Murray. He was an important military leader when the barracks was built around 1850.

Where Was Murray Barracks Located?

Murray Barracks was built between two important roads: Garden Road and Cotton Tree Drive. Today, if you visit Hong Kong, the area where the barracks stood is now home to modern buildings like Asia Pacific Centre.

The Officer's Quarters, which was where the officers lived, was also part of the barracks. This building is now the site of the tall Bank of China Tower. It was close to Queen's Road, which is now known as Queensway.

Right across Garden Road from the barracks was the Murray Parade Ground (Chinese: 美利操場). This was a large open space where soldiers would practice their drills and marches. There was also another barracks nearby called Queen's Road North Barracks, which later became Wellington Barracks.

A little further west, behind a path called Battery Path, you would find the Murray Battery. This was a place with cannons, used for defense.

The Officer's Home: Murray House

The building where the officers lived was first known as the Officer's Mess. Later, it became famous as Murray House. This building has a very interesting story!

In the mid-1980s, before the Bank of China Tower was built, Murray House was carefully taken apart. Each brick was removed one by one! Then, it was moved and rebuilt in a different part of Hong Kong, in a place called Stanley. It's amazing that they could move such a big building!
