Stanley, also known as Chek Chue, is a lively coastal town and a popular place for tourists in Hong Kong. It sits on a peninsula on Hong Kong Island. Stanley is located east of Repulse Bay and west of Shek O. It is close to Chung Hom Kok and Tai Tam. This area is part of the Southern District of Hong Kong.
The Chinese name "Chek Chue" refers to the original village. However, "Stanley" usually means the whole area around the peninsula on Hong Kong Island.
What's in a Name?
Stanley got its English name from Lord Stanley. He later became the Earl of Derby. At the time, he was the British Colonial Secretary when Hong Kong was given to the United Kingdom. He later became the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.
A Look Back in Time
After Hong Kong became part of the British Empire in 1842, Stanley was the first temporary administrative center. Later, the main center moved to the new Victoria City.
During the Battle of Hong Kong in December 1941, British and Canadian soldiers made their final stand at what is now Stanley Fort. The soldiers who survived had to surrender to Japanese forces. The fort used to be a British Army barracks. After Hong Kong was returned to China in 1997, the People's Liberation Army took over the fort.
