Murray A. Lightburn is a talented Canadian musician and composer. He is best known as the main singer and songwriter for the band The Dears.
Many people have compared his singing style and sometimes serious lyrics to those of Morrissey, who was the lead singer of the band The Smiths. Interestingly, The Dears even opened for Morrissey on his solo tour in 2006.
Murray Lightburn has also released his own music. His first solo album, Mass: Light, came out in 2013. His second solo album, Hear Me Out, was released in 2019.
His album Once Upon a Time in Montreal was considered for the 2023 Polaris Music Prize. This award celebrates the best Canadian albums.
Murray is also a composer who creates original music for movies and TV shows. He has made music for films like Any Other Way: The Jackie Shane Story, I Like Movies, and Too Much Sleep. He also composed scores for TV series such as Near or Far, which was released on CBC Gem in 2024, and Black Life: Untold Stories. He even created the original music for the video game We Happy Few, including a special theme for its Lightbearer DLC.
At the 13th Canadian Screen Awards in 2025, Murray Lightburn won an award. He received the Canadian Screen Award for Best Original Music in a Documentary for his excellent work on the film Any Other Way: The Jackie Shane Story.

About His Life
In 2005, Murray Lightburn married Natalia Yanchak. She is also a musician and plays keyboards and sings in The Dears band. They have two children together, named Neptune and Apollo. Murray also enjoys film photography as a hobby.
