Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Murraysville was once a small town in Lorain County, in the U.S. state of Ohio. Today, it no longer exists, which is why it's sometimes called an "extinct town" or a "ghost town." It was located in Carlisle Township.

A Look Back: Murraysville's Story

Murraysville started to grow around 1828. That year, a post office opened there, which was important for sending and receiving mail. This post office stayed open for about 19 years, closing in 1847.

The town got its name from a local business called Murray's Mills. This was a place where a "watermill" was used. A watermill uses the power of flowing water to turn machinery. The person who owned Murray's Mills was called its "proprietor."

In the middle of the 1800s, Murraysville was a busy little community. It had a "saw mill" (for cutting wood) and a "grist mill" (for grinding grain into flour). There was also a "general store" where people could buy everyday items, and a school for children. At its peak, Murraysville had about 25 houses.
