The Museo del Estanquillo (which means "Museum of the Little Shop") is a super cool museum in the heart of Mexico City, Mexico. It's home to a huge collection of items gathered by a famous writer named Carlos Monsivais. Imagine a museum filled with old photos, drawings, toys, books, and even advertisements! It's like a treasure chest showing what life was like in Mexico.
Discovering the Museum's Treasures
Carlos Monsivais spent over 30 years collecting more than 20,000 different objects. His collection includes amazing photographs, tiny models, fun drawings, cartoons, and many everyday items. Everything in the museum helps tell the story of Mexico's culture and its people. It's especially great for seeing examples of "folk art," which is art made by regular people, often with traditional skills.
The idea for this special museum came from Carlos Monsivais himself, along with help from important people like Rafael Barajas, Carlos Payan, Carlos Slim, and the mayor at the time, Andrés Manuel López Obrador. Monsivais chose the name "El Estanquillo" because his collection was so varied, just like a small shop that sells all sorts of different things. The museum first opened its doors on November 23, 2006. Its first exhibit was called En orden de aparición, which explored the identity of Mexico City from old times to today. The city government helps support the museum.
The Story of the Building
The Museo del Estanquillo is located in a beautiful old building called La Esmeralda. You can find it right on the corner of Isabel La Católica Street and Madero Street. Long ago, in the late 1800s, this building was home to a fancy jewelry store called La Esmeralda Hauser-Zivy and Company.
Over the years, the building has had many different lives! After being a jewelry shop, it became a government office, then a bank. It even hosted a nightclub called La Opulencia for a while. Today, besides the museum, it also has a record store. It's amazing how one building can have so much history!
