The Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit (MOCAD) is a special art museum in Detroit, Michigan. It's a place where you can see amazing new art from today's artists. Unlike many museums, MOCAD doesn't collect art to keep forever. Instead, it focuses on showing exciting, fresh exhibitions that change often.

Its Cool Building

MOCAD is located in a large building. It used to be a car dealership. The building is about 22,000 square feet! A famous architect named Albert Kahn designed the original building. The museum kept the building's original look. This makes it feel raw and unfinished on purpose. This unique style adds to the modern art experience.

A Look Back: MOCAD's History

The Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit was started by Julia Reyes Taubman. She wanted to create a place for modern art in Detroit.

Amazing Art Shows

MOCAD's very first art show was called Meditations in an Emergency. It opened on October 28, 2006. Klaus Kertess helped choose the art for this show. It featured works by artists like Tabaimo, Kara Walker, and Nari Ward.

Another important show was "Shrinking Cities." This exhibition ran from February to April 2007. It explored how cities around the world lose people. Detroit was a big part of this exhibition.

Later in 2007, MOCAD showed "Stuff: The International Collection of Burt Aaron." This exhibit displayed the personal art collection of Burt Aaron. He was a well-known collector from Michigan.

In 2013, the museum featured "Mobile Homestead" by Mike Kelley. This was another memorable exhibition.

Fun Events and Performances

MOCAD is not just for looking at art. It also hosts many different events. You can enjoy music, listen to writers, and watch performances.

Many talented people have performed there. Musicians like Roy Ayers and Amp Fiddler have played at MOCAD. Writers such as John Giorno have shared their work. Performance artists like Jody Oberfelder have also entertained visitors.
