The Museum of Lakeland Life & Industry is a cool museum in Kendal, Cumbria, in northwest England. People sometimes call it MOLLI for short. It used to be known as the Museum of Lakeland Life.
About the Museum
How It Started
This museum first opened its doors in 1971. A special guest, Princess Alexandra, helped open it. Just two years later, in 1973, it won a really big award: the first-ever UK Museum of the Year! That's like winning a championship for museums.
What You Can See
The museum shows what life was like in the beautiful Lake District (also called Lakeland) starting from the late 1700s. You can learn about how people lived, worked, and played in this amazing area.
The museum is located inside the old stables of the Abbot Hall Art Gallery. These stables are very old, built in the Georgian style. The museum is looked after by an organization called Lakeland Arts.
Special Exhibits
The museum has many interesting displays. You can learn about the famous author Arthur Ransome and his popular Swallows and Amazons series of books. These books are all about adventures on boats and islands!
You can also see displays about local photographers who captured the beauty of the Lake District. There are also exhibits about the Arts & Crafts Movement in the Lake District, which was a style of art and design.
The museum is also the main office for the Arthur Ransome Society. This group helps keep Arthur Ransome's stories and legacy alive.
Current Status
As of January 2021, the museum is closed for a big update. Lakeland Arts is working to make the whole Abbot Hall Art Gallery site even better.
