The Game of Musta Maija
Musta Maija is a "shedding-type" card game. This means your main goal is to get rid of all your cards before anyone else. The last player left with cards loses the game.
How to Play
Musta Maija is best played with 3 to 5 players. You'll need a standard deck of 52 playing cards. In this game, Aces are the highest cards.
Setting Up the Game
- First, shuffle the deck well.
- Each player gets 5 cards.
- The rest of the cards are placed face-down to form a "stock" pile.
- Take the top card from the stock and place it face-up underneath the stock. This card decides the "trump suit" for the game.
- Special Rule: If the trump card is a Spade, put it back into the middle of the stock. Then, pick a new card to be the trump.
Special Cards
- The Queen of Spades is a very important card in Musta Maija. It's called Maija (or Black Maria).
- Maija is special because it counts as a Spade, but it cannot be beaten by any other card. Also, Maija cannot beat any other cards.
Playing Your Turn
- Players take turns playing cards, moving clockwise around the table.
- If you have fewer than 5 cards in your hand and there are still cards in the stock, you must draw cards until you have 5.
- When it's your turn, you can play one or more cards from your hand onto the table.
- Important Rules for Playing Cards:
- All the cards you play must be of the same suit. (Remember, Maija counts as a Spade!)
- You cannot play more cards than the player to your left has in their hand.
- Playing cards is one action. You cannot draw cards from the stock at the same time you are playing cards.
Beating Cards
- After you play cards, the player to your left tries to "beat" them.
- To beat a card, you must play a higher card of the same suit.
- Any trump card can beat any non-trump card.
- One card can only beat one other card.
- Remember, Musta Maija (the Queen of Spades) cannot be beaten by any card, and it cannot beat any other cards.
- Beating cards is one action. You cannot draw cards from the stock while you are trying to beat cards.
What Happens Next?
- Once cards are played and potentially beaten, the entire set of cards (called a "trick") is removed from the game.
- If the player to your left successfully beat all the cards you played, it becomes their turn to start the next round.
- If the player to your left could not (or didn't want to) beat all the cards you played, they must pick up all the cards that were played in that round. Then, the turn passes to the next player on their left.
Winning the Game
- As the game goes on, the stock pile will eventually run out.
- Once the stock is empty, players who get rid of all their cards are "out" of the game. They don't play anymore.
- The game continues until only one player is left holding cards.
- The last player left with cards in their hand (especially if they have Maija!) is the loser of the game. Everyone else wins!
