Life and Career
Mustafa Arruf was born in Nador in 1958. He started learning art at a special school in Melilla, Spain. Later, he continued his art studies in Granada. From a young age, he loved both painting and sculpture.
He worked with different materials like wood and stone. But he found that bronze was the best material for his art. He could express his ideas most clearly with it.
In the mid-1980s, Mustafa moved to Germany. He showed his art in Frankfurt. After a short time in Holland, he moved to Madrid in the 1990s. This was a very busy time for his art. He worked with art foundries and galleries.
Later, he taught art in public programs. He eventually became a restorer at the Archaeological Museum of Melilla. This meant he helped fix and preserve old artworks.
Mustafa Arruf's Sculptures
Mustafa Arruf's sculptures are found in many places. You can see them in city squares, streets, parks, and even in public buildings. His art often mixes beautiful designs with deeper meanings.
Some of his sculptures are busts or statues of famous people. These people were often from or connected to his hometown of Melilla. For example, he made statues of teachers, painters, writers, and architects. One famous work is a tribute to the playwright Fernando Arrabal.

He also created more modern sculptures. These works often have strong differences in their design. They might combine flat and round shapes, or smooth and rough textures. This creates a feeling of balance and energy in his art.
The Encuentros Sculpture
In 1997, Mustafa Arruf won a competition in Melilla. He created a huge sculpture called Encuentros, which means "Meetings." This is one of his most famous and largest works. It celebrates the 500th anniversary of Melilla's Spanish foundation.
A smaller copy of half of Encuentros is in Juan Carlos I Park in Madrid. Another copy of the other half is in the Park of the Three Cultures in Toledo.
Mustafa Arruf explained that Encuentros represents the coming together of cultures, continents, and people. He said it shows the "embrace of continents and cultures." He believed that art allows for many different interpretations.
In 2002, he created a series of sculptures of women. These works were for the city of Melilla. They had a flowing, spiral design.
Mustafa Arruf passed away on February 10, 2025, at the age of 66.
