Place of origin Finland
Main ingredients Blueberries and talkkuna

Mustikkapöperö is a yummy, traditional Finnish dish. It's also known by other fun names like pöperö, pöpörö, pöppi, or pöllöhillo. This simple treat is made by mixing crushed blueberries with a special finely ground flour mixture called talkkuna.

Talkkuna is a type of flour that adds a unique flavor. Be careful not to add too much, or it can become bitter! Some people like to add sugar to make it sweeter. Newer recipes might even include whipped cream or buttermilk, either mixed in or served on top.

For the most authentic Mustikkapöperö, the talkkuna should be made from toasted oats. This dish is usually enjoyed when blueberries are fresh and in season. While blueberries are the main ingredient, some people have traditionally made it with lingonberries. If there aren't enough blueberries, currants can sometimes be added too.

This special dish is mostly known in the Häme region of Finland. No one is quite sure where its name came from! Mustikkapöperö is always made fresh at home. You won't find it sold in stores because it doesn't keep well after it's made.

Did you know that "Pöllöhillo" (one of its other names) even appeared in a book? It was mentioned in Helena Meripaasi's novel, also called Pöllöhillo, which came out in 2007. In the book, it was talked about as a part of Finnish traditions.
