Mudhal Mariyadhai is a 1985 Tamil movie directed by P. Bharathiraja. It stars famous actors like Sivaji Ganesan and Radha in the main roles. Other important actors include Vadivukkarasi, Ranjani, Aruna Mucherla, A. K. Veerasamy, and Sathyaraj. The movie's music was created by Ilaiyaraaja.

When the film was released, many people praised it. It won the Best Lyricist Award for Vairamuthu and the Best Feature Film in Tamil Award for Bharathiraja at the 33rd National Film Awards. The main actors also won Filmfare Awards South for Best Tamil Actor and Best Tamil Actress.

The role of Kuyil was first offered to Radhika, but she chose to act in another movie called Swati Mutyam instead.

The movie was also made into a Telugu version called Aatma Bandhuvu. It was the last big hit for Sivaji Ganesan where he played the main character.

Story of the Movie

The film begins with friends and family gathered around an old village leader named Malaichami (Sivaji Ganesan), who is very sick. The story then goes back in time, showing important parts of Malaichami's life.

One of these parts is when a young boatman's daughter, Kuyil (Radha), comes to his village. Malaichami is unhappily married to a wife named Ponnatha (Vadivukkarasi), who has a bad temper. He finds comfort in his friendship with Kuyil. This friendship starts to cause talk and makes things difficult for both Malaichami and Kuyil in their village.

Movie's Influence and Legacy

Mudhal Mariyadhai had a lasting impact on Tamil cinema and popular culture.

  • In the 1992 movie Thalattu Ketkuthamma, the actor Goundamani sings "Poongatru Thirumbuma" to impress his wife.
  • In Aavarampoo (1992), Goundamani also sings the song "Hey Kuruvi".
  • In Rajakumaran (1994), a different version of "Poongatru" is heard in the background.
  • In Parambarai (1996), Senthil's character sings lyrics from one of the songs.
  • In Unakkaga Ellam Unakkaga (1999), Goundamani's character tries to impress his lover by lifting a huge stone, just like Sivaji Ganesan did in Mudhal Mariyadhai.
  • The actor Vivek made a funny parody of Mudhal Mariyadhai in the film Parthiban Kanavu (2003).
  • In Mozhi (2007), a character is shown watching the "Poongatru" song on TV.

A famous line from the movie, "Enaku oru unma therinjaaganum" (meaning "I need to know the truth"), spoken by A. K. Veerasamy, became very popular. The writer of this film, R. Selvaraj, later directed a movie called Neethana Andha Kuyil in 1986, which was inspired by a line from the song "Poongatru". Another song, "Rasave Unnai Nambi," also inspired a movie with the same name starring Ramarajan. In the 2010 movie Singam, a farmer imitates a dialogue from Mudhal Mariyadhai, which made people even more interested in the film.
