The National Film Award for Best Tamil Feature Film is a special prize given every year in India. It celebrates the best movies made in the Tamil film industry. This award is part of the bigger National Film Awards, which are the most important film awards in India.
The award is given by the National Film Development Corporation of India. Winners receive a "Rajat Kamal," which means Silver Lotus, and a cash prize. It's a big honor for filmmakers in Tamil cinema.
About the Award
The National Film Awards started in 1954 to honor the best films in Indian cinema. These awards also recognize great movies made in different regional languages across India.
How the Award Started
Awards for films in regional languages began in 1955. This included films in Bengali, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Tamil, and Telugu. At first, there were three awards for Tamil films:
- The "President's Silver Medal for Best Feature Film"
- A "Certificate of Merit for the Second Best Feature Film"
- A "Certificate of Merit for the Third Best Feature Film"
The two "Certificate of Merit" awards stopped being given out in 1967. Since the 70th National Film Awards, the main award is simply called "Best Tamil Feature Film."
First Winners
The very first film to win the President's Silver Medal for Best Feature Film in Tamil was Malaikkallan. This movie was directed by S. M. Sriramulu Naidu in 1954.
The films Andha Naal and Edhir Paradhathu received the Certificates of Merit for second and third best Tamil films that year.

The award includes the 'Rajat Kamal' (Silver Lotus Award) and a cash prize. Many amazing films have won this award over the years. Here are some of the winners:
