Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The cinema of India is all about the amazing movies made in India. Indian movies have been around since the early 1900s. They are super popular not just in India, but also in places like the Middle East, South Asia, and even Western countries such as the United Kingdom and the United States.

In 2010, India made more films than any other country, even more than Hollywood and China! Two big parts of Indian cinema are Bollywood (which makes movies in Hindi) and Jollywood (which makes movies in Sanskrit). These are often seen as the main types of Indian movies.

What is Indian Cinema?

Indian cinema is a huge and exciting world of films. It includes movies made in many different languages across India. This makes it one of the largest film industries globally. India's film industry is known for its vibrant stories and catchy music.

A Long History of Movies

Movies in India started way back in the early 20th century. The first full-length Indian movie was Raja Harishchandra, made in 1913. It was a silent film, meaning it had no spoken words. Dadasaheb Phalke is known as the "father of Indian cinema" because he made this important first film.

Early Silent Films

Before talkies (movies with sound), silent films were popular. These films often told stories using actions and music. They laid the groundwork for the huge film industry we see today.

The Arrival of Sound

The first Indian movie with sound, called a "talkie," was Alam Ara in 1931. This changed everything! Movies could now have songs and dialogue, making them even more entertaining. Soon, movies in different Indian languages started to appear. For example, Kalidas (1931) was the first Tamil talkie, and Dena Paona (1931) was the first Bengali talkie.
