Muhammad Kutty Panaparambil Ismail (born September 7, 1951), better known as Mammootty, is a famous Indian actor and film producer. He mainly works in Malayalam-language movies but has also acted in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Hindi, and English films.

Over his long career of more than fifty years, Mammootty has starred in over 400 films. He has won many awards for his acting, including three National Film Awards. In 1998, the Government of India gave him the Padma Shri, one of the country's highest honors, for his work in movies. In 2022, he also received the Kerala Prabha Award from the Government of Kerala.

Mammootty's first movie role was a small part in the 1971 film Anubhavangal Paalichakal. His first main role was in a 1979 film called Devalokam, but it was never released. He became well-known in 1981 after winning a state award for the movie Ahimsa. His career took off in the 1980s, and he became a major star in Malayalam cinema.

Throughout the 2000s, he continued to have great success. He won a National Film Award for playing the main character in Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar. Some of his most popular movies include the action-comedy Madhura Raja (2019) and the action-thriller Bheeshma Parvam (2022).

Mammootty was born on September 7, 1951, in Chandiroor, Kerala, India. He grew up in the village of Chempu in a middle-class family. His father, Ismail, was a businessman who sold clothes and rice, and his mother, Fatima, was a housewife. Mammootty is the oldest of six children.

He went to Government High School for his early education. Later, his family moved to Kochi, where he continued his studies. He attended Sacred Heart College and Maharaja's College. He then studied law at the Government Law College, Ernakulam and worked as a lawyer for two years.

In 1979, he married Sulfath Kuttyy. They have a daughter named Surumi and a son, Dulquer Salmaan, who is also a famous actor.

Film Career

1971–1986: The Beginning of a Star

Mammootty's acting journey began in 1971 with a small, uncredited role in the film Anubhavangal Paalichakal. His first role with a line of dialogue was in the 1973 film Kaalachakram. For a while, he focused on his law career. But his passion for acting led him back to movies.

His first credited role was in the 1980 film Vilkkanundu Swapnangal. The same year, he got a major role in the movie Mela, which helped people notice his talent. In 1981, he played his first lead role in Thrishna. He also won his first Kerala State Film Award for his supporting role in Ahimsa.

By 1983, Mammootty was playing lead roles in many successful films. Movies like Sandhyakku Virinja Poovu and Aa Raathri were big hits and made him a popular star. He became known for playing strong and emotional characters.

In 1984, he starred in Athirathram as a smuggler named Tharadas. The character became very popular, and Mammootty became a superstar. He won his first Kerala State Film Award for Best Actor for the 1984 film Adiyozhukkukal.

In 1985, he starred in the romantic drama Yathra. The film was a huge success and ran in theaters for 200 days. For his acting in Yathra and Nirakkoottu, he won a Special Jury Award at the Kerala State Film Awards.

1987–1999: Rise to Superstardom

After a few less successful films, Mammootty made a big comeback in 1987 with the crime thriller New Delhi. The movie was a massive hit and became the highest-grossing Malayalam film at the time. This film cemented his position as a leading star.

In 1988, he played the famous detective Sethurama Iyer in Oru CBI Diary Kurippu. This was the first film in the popular CBI series. The movie was a record-breaker at the box office.

One of his most famous roles came in 1989 with the historical drama Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha. He played a legendary warrior, and his performance won him his first National Film Award for Best Actor. The film is considered one of the greatest Malayalam movies ever made.

In 1990, he won another National Film Award for his role in Mathilukal. In this film, he played a prisoner who falls in love with a female inmate he can hear but never see.

Throughout the 1990s, Mammootty starred in many successful films. In 1995, he played a powerful District Collector in the political thriller The King, which became the highest-grossing Malayalam film of its time. In 1999, he won his third National Film Award for playing B. R. Ambedkar in the movie Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar.

2000–2009: A Decade of Hits

The 2000s were a great decade for Mammootty. He started the year with a cameo in the blockbuster Narasimham and starred in the hit action film Valliettan. He also acted in the successful Tamil film Kandukondain Kandukondain.

In 2004, he won the Kerala State Film Award for Best Actor for his role in Kaazhcha. In this film, he played a man who takes in a young boy who survived the Gujarat earthquake.

In 2005, he starred in Rajamanikyam, where he played a cattle dealer with a unique accent. The film was a huge blockbuster and broke many box office records.

In 2007, he starred in Big B, a stylish action film that became a cult classic. He also played an important role in the heartwarming film Katha Parayumpol.

In 2009, he starred in the epic historical film Kerala Varma Pazhassi Raja. The movie was a massive success and earned around ₹49 crore at the box office. He also won the Kerala State Film Award for Best Actor for the film Paleri Manikyam.

2010–Present: Continued Success

Mammootty continued to deliver powerful performances in the 2010s. In 2010, he starred in Pranchiyettan & the Saint, a satirical comedy that was both a critical and commercial success.

He received praise for his roles in films like Varsham (2014) and Pathemari (2015). In 2019, his action-comedy Madhura Raja became the highest-grossing film of his career. The same year, he also starred in the critically acclaimed Tamil film Peranbu, where he played a father caring for his daughter with cerebral palsy.

In 2021, he starred in the mystery-thriller The Priest and the political drama One. In 2022, his film Bheeshma Parvam became a blockbuster.

In 2023, he won another Kerala State Film Award for Best Actor for his role in Nanpakal Nerathu Mayakkam. He also starred in the critically acclaimed film Kaathal – The Core. In 2024, he appeared in the action film Turbo and the horror film Bramayugam.

Besides acting, Mammootty is involved in many other activities. He is the chairman of Malayalam Communications, which runs TV channels like Kairali TV. He also owns a film production company called Mammootty Kampany.

Mammootty is also known for his charity work. He is a patron of the Pain and Palliative Care Society, which helps people with cancer. He is also a goodwill ambassador for several social causes, including a project to end child labor.

In 2007, he published his first book, Kazhchapadu, which is a collection of essays he has written.
