Muhammad Kutty Panaparambil Ismail (born on 7 September 1951), known as Mammootty, is a famous Indian actor and film producer. He mostly works in films made in the Malayalam language. He has also acted in movies in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Hindi, and English.

Over five decades, Mammootty has appeared in more than 420 films. He has won many awards, including three National Film Awards. He also has eleven Kerala State Film Awards and fifteen Filmfare Awards South. In 1998, the Government of India gave him the Padma Shri. This is the fourth-highest award for civilians in India. In 2022, he received the Kerala Prabha Award from the Government of Kerala. CNN once called Mammootty one of "the men who changed the face of the Indian Cinema."

Mammootty started acting in the Malayalam film Anubhavangal Paalichakal in 1971. His first main role was in Devalokam (1979), which was not released. He became well-known in 1981. He won the Kerala State Film Award for Second Best Actor for his role in Ahimsa. Later, films like New Delhi (1987) helped him become a big star. The films that followed made him one of the top actors in Malayalam cinema.

The 2000s were a very successful time for him. He won a National Film Award for Best Actor for his role in Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar (2000). He also won Kerala State Film Awards for Kaazcha (2004) and Paleri Manikyam (2009). Some of his biggest hit movies include Madhura Raja (2019), Bheeshma Parvam (2022), and Kannur Squad (2023).

Mammootty is also the chairman of Malayalam Communications. This company runs TV channels like Kairali TV. He owns production companies like Playhouse and Mammootty Kampany. In August 2021, Mammootty received the UAE Golden Visa.

Mammootty was born on 7 September 1951 in Chandiroor. He grew up in the village of Chempu near Vaikom in Kottayam district, Kerala, India. His family was a middle-class Muslim family. His father, Ismail, had a business selling clothes and rice. His mother, Fatima, was a housewife. Mammootty is their oldest son. He has two younger brothers, Ibrahimkutty and Zakariah, and three younger sisters, Ameena, Sauda and Shafina.

He went to Government High School, Kulasekharamangalam, for his early schooling. In the 1960s, his family moved to Ernakulam. There, he attended Government School Ernakulam. He studied at Sacred Heart College, Thevara for his pre-degree. He then went to Maharaja's College, Ernakulam for his degree. He also earned a law degree (LL.B.) from Government Law College, Ernakulam. He worked as a lawyer for two years in Manjeri.

He married Sulfath Kuttyy in a traditional wedding. Mammootty sees his wife as his best friend. They are known as a great couple in the Malayalam film industry. They have a daughter, Surumi (born 1982), and a son, Dulquer Salmaan (born 1986). Dulquer Salmaan is also an actor. Mammootty lives in Kochi with his family. His younger brother, Ibrahimkutty, also acted in films. His nephews, Maqbool Salmaan and Ashkar Saudan, are also actors.

Film career

Early acting years (1971–1982)

Mammootty first appeared on screen as an extra in Anubhavangal Paalichakal (1971). He was 20 years old. In 1973, he had a small, uncredited role in Kaalachakram. This was the first film where he spoke a dialogue. In 1975, he acted in a play called Sabarmathi. After finishing college in 1976, Mammootty started working as a lawyer.

During this time, he met director M. T. Vasudevan Nair. Nair cast him in a key role in Devalokam (1979). But the film was never finished. Nair then gave him a small, credited role in Vilkkanundu Swapnangal (1980). This was his first credited role. In 1980, he got a more important role in Mela. He was credited as "Sajin" in Sphodanam (1981). Later that year, he played a lead role in Thrishna (1981). He won his first Kerala State Film Award for Second Best Actor for Ahimsa (1981).

In 1982, he starred in Yavanika as a police inspector. He also played a negative role in Padayottam. He had a key role in John Jaffer Janardhanan, a remake of a Hindi film. He also appeared in Ee Nadu, which was a big hit. In 1982, Mammootty acted in 23 films, mostly in supporting roles.

Becoming a leading star (1983–1986)

In 1983, Mammootty started taking on main roles. He starred in the comedy Visa, which was a hit. His next film, Sandhyakku Virinja Poovu, was a huge success. He played a lawyer in this film. This movie helped make him a leading actor. He also starred in Pinnilavu, another commercial success.

He played a film superstar in Lekhayude Maranam Oru Flashback. He then acted as an antihero in Koodevide, which was very successful. This film also won the Kerala State Film Award for Best Film with Popular Appeal and Aesthetic Value. He worked with director Joshiy for the first time in Aa Raathri. This film was a commercial success and had popular songs. It is seen as a trendsetter for family dramas.

In 1984, he played the smuggler Tharadas in Athirathram. This film was very popular and made him a superstar. He later played this character again in Balram vs Tharadas (2006). He also starred in Kanamarayathu, where he played a rich businessman. For this role, he won his first Kerala Film Critics Association Award for Best Actor. He played a police officer in Ithiri Poove Chuvannapoove.

He appeared in the art film Akkare as a Malayali living abroad. He then starred in Adiyozhukkukal as a fisherman. This film was a big success. Mammootty won his first Kerala State Film Award for Best Actor and Filmfare Award for Best Actor – Malayalam for this role. He also starred in Aalkkoottathil Thaniye, which was a box office hit. Continued success (1987–1990)

After some less successful films, Mammootty found big success with New Delhi (1987). He played a journalist seeking revenge. This film became the highest-grossing Malayalam film at that time. The same year, he played a school teacher in Thaniyavarthanam. His performance was highly praised.

In 1988, Mammootty appeared in the comedy film Manu Uncle. This film won the National Film Award for Best Children's Film. He also played investigator Sethurama Iyer in Oru CBI Diary Kurippu. This film was a huge hit and set box office records. He also starred in the action film August 1. Mammootty worked with director I. V. Sasi on three films: Abkari, Mukthi, and 1921. In 1921, he played a World War I veteran.

In 1989, Mammootty starred in Charithram and Adikkurippu, a crime thriller. He also played Chandu Chekavar in the historical drama Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha. This movie won four National Film Awards, including Best Actor for Mammootty. It also won seven Kerala State Film Awards. The film was a huge success and ran for over 300 days. New roles and industries (1991–1994)

In 1991, Mammootty starred in Amaram, playing a fisherman who wants his daughter to be a doctor. This role earned him another Filmfare award. He also acted in two successful Tamil films, Thalapathi and Azhagan. He worked with I.V Sasi again for Inspector Balram and Neelagiri. Inspector Balram was a commercial success.

In 1992, he acted with Kannada actor Vishnuvardhan in Kauravar. Mammootty played a mentally challenged man in Soorya Manasam. He was praised for this role. He also starred in Pappayude Swantham Appoos, a film about a father and son. This film was a big success. Mammootty entered the Telugu film industry with Swathi Kiranam in 1992.

In 1993, Mammootty starred in the action film Dhruvam. This film was a super hit. That year, he won the kerala State Film Award for Best Actor for Vatsalyam, Ponthan Mada, and Vidheyan. Blockbusters and new characters (1995–1999)

In 1995, Mammootty played a college professor in Mazhayethum Munpe. He then played a strong District Collector in the political thriller The King. This film became the highest-grossing Malayalam film at that time. He also starred in the Tamil political thriller Makkal Aatchi.

In 1996, his first Malayalam film was Azhakiya Ravanan. He then acted in Hitler, which was a huge commercial success. It broke the record set by The King as the highest-grossing Malayalam movie. He also did a Telugu movie called Surya Putrulu.

In 1997, Mammootty won the Best Actor Award at the Filmfare Awards for Bhoothakkannadi. This is considered one of his best performances. He also did two Tamil films, Pudhayal and Arasiyal. He continued his success with Dada Sahib and the Tamil movie Kandukondain Kandukondain. Both were blockbusters. He won the Best Actor Award at the Filmfare Awards for Arayannangalude Veedu. In 2001, he starred in Rakshasa Rajavu, a big hit. He also played the lead in the Tamil film Aanandham.

In 2003, Mammootty played a bachelor in the romantic comedy Chronic Bachelor. This film was a commercial success. He also acted as an Indian Army officer in Pattalam. In the 2010s, Mammootty continued to act in many films. Some notable ones include Pokkiri Raja (2010), Pranchiyettan & the Saint (2010), and Best Actor (2010). In 2011, he appeared in August 15, Bombay March 12, and Venicile Vyaapari.

In 2012, his films included The King & the Commissioner, Shikari, and Cobra. He also produced the film Jawan of Vellimala. In 2013, he starred in Kammath & Kammath, Immanuel, and Kadal Kadannoru Mathukkutty.

In 2014, he acted in Balyakalasakhi, Gangster, and Manglish. He received praise for his role in Munnariyippu. RajadhiRaja was a hit for him. He also starred in Varsham, which was well-received.

His 2015 films included Fireman, Bhaskar the Rascal (a commercial success), and Pathemari. In 2016, he acted in Puthiya Niyamam and Kasaba. He also starred in White and Thoppil Joppan.

In 2017, his films included The Great Father, Puthan Panam, and Masterpiece. In 2018, he acted in Parole, Uncle, and the crime thriller Abrahaminte Santhathikal. In the 1980s, Mammootty was a co-owner of a production company called Casino. This company produced films like Nadodikkattu (1987). He also started a television production company, Megabytes. This company produced TV shows like Jwalayay.

Mammootty owns a film distribution company called Mammootty Technotainment. Since 2009, he has owned Playhouse, which distributes films he stars in. It has also started producing films like Jawan of Vellimala. Since 2010, he has been the chairman of Malayalam Communications. This company runs Malayalam TV channels like Kairali TV. In 2021, he started another production company, the Mammootty Kampany. This company produced films like Rorschach (2022).

Mammootty has said he does not want to be a politician. In 2007, he published his first book, Kazhchapadu (meaning "Perspective"). It is a collection of essays he wrote.

Helping others

Mammootty supports the Pain and Palliative Care Society in Kerala. This group helps people with advanced cancer. He works with the Pain and Palliative Care Centre in Kozhikode. In 2018, he started a project to provide care for cancer patients across Kerala. He also supports the Care and Share International Foundation. This charity helps reduce inequality in society. For example, they helped raise money for heart surgeries for children through the Hridaya Sparsham project. A fundraiser supported by Mammootty raised a lot of money very quickly.

Mammootty is a goodwill ambassador for the Street India Movement. This project aims to stop child begging and child labour. He helps promote this movement, which works with orphanages. He is also a goodwill ambassador for Akshaya. This project helps spread information technology in Kerala.

In August 2014, Mammootty started the My Tree Challenge. This challenge encourages people to plant trees. He challenged other actors like Mohanlal and Shah Rukh Khan to join. Kazhcha is a project organized by Mammootty's fan clubs. It provides free eye care and treatment. They also give free eyeglasses to children.
