Muthoni wa Gichuru grew up in a small village called Matanya. This village is located near Nanyuki in Kenya. When she was a child, her father often read to her. She especially remembers a Gikuyu book called Kamina na Kamina. This early experience likely sparked her love for stories.

Muthoni later studied at Moi University. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in information sciences.

Her Journey as a Writer

Muthoni wa Gichuru started her writing journey in 2002. Her husband, Joseph Kamau, encouraged her to begin writing stories. Her very first book was Breaking the Silence, published in 2009. This book was quite successful! It was a runner-up for the 2011 Jomo Kenyatta Prize for Literature. This is a big award in Kenya for books, and her book was recognized in the youth category.

Another one of her books, The Carving, won a major award. It was published in 2019. This book won the 2018 CODE Burt Prize for African Young Adult Literature in Kenya. This prize celebrates great books for young adults in Africa.
