Scientific classification

The Myer's loach (also called Myer's kuhli loach or giant kuhli) is a cool type of fish. It's a loach from the Pangio family. You can find these fish naturally in countries like Laos, Cambodia, Viet Nam, and Thailand. They look really neat with their black bodies and bright orange stripes! Myer's loaches can grow up to about 10 centimeters (4 inches) long.

In the wild, giant kuhli loaches love to gather under leaves and plants in the water. Even though they don't swim in big schools like some fish, they do like to be with other Myer's loaches.

Keeping Myer's Loaches as Pets

Myer's loaches are peaceful fish that make great additions to an aquarium. They have become a bit harder to find for fish lovers in the United States lately. Because their names are so similar, people sometimes confuse them with the "regular" kuhli loach, which is called Pangio semicincta.

What Do Myer's Loaches Eat?

These loaches eat many different kinds of food. They are omnivores, meaning they eat both plants and meat. They seem to need a lot of protein in their diet. Myer's loaches especially love to eat live bloodworms and other small worms. They also enjoy shrimp pellets and algae wafers. If you have flake food or other bits that sink to the bottom of the tank, they will happily eat those too!

Behavior in the Tank

Myer's loaches are colorful and peaceful fish that stay mostly at the bottom of the tank. They won't attack other fish. When it's feeding time, giant kuhlis tend to move slowly towards their food. They often stop along the way, as if they are taking their time. Other bottom-dwelling fish, like corydoras, might rush to the food and eat it all quickly. It's best to keep Myer's loaches in groups of at least three in your aquarium. This helps them feel safe and happy.

How Long Do They Live?

Like many types of loaches, giant kuhlis can live for about ten years if they are kept in good conditions. They are not as picky about water quality as some other tropical fish. This makes them a good choice for people who are just starting out with an aquarium.
