Acanthophthalmus semicinctus Fraser-Brunner, 1940

The half-banded kuhli loach, also known as Pangio semicincta, is a fascinating type of fish. It belongs to a group of fish called cobitid loaches. You can find these interesting creatures in parts of Asia, including the Malay Peninsula, Borneo, and Sumatra.

This fish is quite popular in the world of aquariums. Many people like to keep them as pets! However, it's often mistaken for another similar fish called Pangio kuhlii. The Pangio kuhlii is a bit bigger and is very rarely seen in pet stores. This is because it mostly lives in Java, Indonesia, where it's not often collected for the fish trade.

What Does It Look Like?

The half-banded kuhli loach has a unique look. It's a long, thin fish, much like a tiny eel. It can grow up to about 10 centimeters (about 4 inches) long.

Its body has a cool pattern of dark brown bands, usually between nine and twelve of them. These bands are a bit uneven. In between the dark bands, you'll see bright yellow colors. Its belly is a pale white.

When they are fully grown, female loaches are often a little bigger and heavier than the males. For male loaches, the first fin ray on their pectoral fins (the fins near their gills) is usually thicker.

Where Does It Live?

The half-banded kuhli loach makes its home in the Malay Peninsula, Borneo, and Sumatra. These areas are in Southeast Asia.

These fish prefer calm, shallow waters. They often live in places like slow-moving streams, swamps, and oxbow lakes. These habitats are usually shaded by trees, which keeps the water cool. The water itself often looks dark, like tea, because of something called "tannins." Tannins are released from decaying plants, and they make the water slightly acidic. The bottom of these watery homes is usually soft sand or mud.

Behavior and Diet

Kuhli loaches are very interesting to watch! They like to search for food in the sand or mud at the bottom of their habitat. They take mouthfuls of sand and sift through it using their gills. This way, they can find tiny snacks like insect larvae, small crustaceans (like tiny shrimp), and other little animals.

These fish are also very social. In the wild, they live together in large groups. If you have them in an aquarium, you'll often see them staying close to each other. They might even squeeze into the same cave or hiding spot! Kuhli loaches are known to be peaceful fish. They don't usually bother other fish, even those of their own kind.
