Myra Miller (1811-1891) was an amazing Black businesswoman and baker. She became very famous in Atlanta, Georgia. This was during a time called Reconstruction, right after the American Civil War.

Early Life

Myra Miller was born in Virginia in 1811. She faced many challenges in her early life. She was forced to work as a cook for others. Later, she was sold to someone in Rome, Georgia.

Building a Business

In 1871, Myra Miller moved to Atlanta with her husband. There, she decided to start her own bakery. This was a very brave step for a Black woman at that time.

Her bakery quickly became well known across Atlanta. People especially loved her delicious wedding fruitcakes. These cakes were so popular that customers ordered them from all over the country! Myra Miller showed great skill and determination as an entrepreneur.

Legacy

Myra Miller's success as a baker and businesswoman was inspiring. She built a thriving business during a difficult period in American history. She passed away in 1891. She was buried in the African American section of Oakland Cemetery in Atlanta. Her story shows how hard work and talent can lead to great achievements.
