Nélida Piñon (born May 3, 1937 – died December 17, 2022) was a very important Brazilian writer and professor. Many people thought she was one of the best writers in Brazil.
Life Story
Nélida Cuiñas Piñon was born in 1937 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Her mother was a homemaker, and her father was a merchant. Her family had roots in Galicia, a region in Spain. Her mother's parents were from Galicia, and her father was born there before moving to Brazil.
Nélida studied at the Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro. After her studies, she worked as a journalist for a newspaper called O Globo and a magazine. She also taught writing at different universities, including Columbia University and Johns Hopkins.
Her first novel, Guia-Mapa de Gabriel Arcanjo (which means "The Guidebook of Archangel Gabriel"), was written in 1961. It was about a character talking about Christian ideas with a guardian angel.
In 1984, she wrote one of her most famous books, A República dos Sonhos (meaning "The Republic of Dreams"). This book tells the story of several generations of a family from Galicia who moved to Brazil. This story was inspired by her own family's journey.
Nélida Piñon received many awards for her writing. She won the FIL Award in 1995 and the Prince of Asturias Award for literature in 2005. She was also the President of the Academia Brasileira de Letras (Brazilian Academy of Letters) from 1996 to 1997. This is a very important position for writers in Brazil. In 2021, she also received Spanish citizenship.
Nélida Piñon passed away on December 17, 2022, in Lisbon, Portugal. She was 85 years old.
