Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Nrpendradevi or Nṛpatendradevī was an important queen who ruled in the 8th century in a place called Sambhupura in ancient Cambodia. She was a queen regnant, which means she ruled the kingdom all by herself, not just as a king's wife.

Who Was Nrpendradevi?

Nrpendradevi was a powerful queen from the 8th century. She ruled over the kingdom of Sambhupura, which was part of a larger area known as Chenla in what is now Cambodia. She was a queen who held the highest power in the land.

Family and Early Life

Nrpendradevi was born into a royal family. Her mother was Queen Indrani of Sambhupura. Her father was King Pushkaraksha, who was also known as Indraloka. It is thought that her father might have been the son of another queen named Jayadevi. He became a co-ruler with Queen Indrani when they got married.

Becoming Queen

Instead of her brother, Prince Sambhuvarman (who was also called Rudravarman), Nrpendradevi inherited the throne from her mother, Queen Indrani. This means she became the ruler after her mother. Her brother, Prince Sambhuvarman, later married their cousin, Princess Narendradevi of Chenla.

Her Family and Successors

Queen Nrpendradevi married her cousin and nephew, Prince Rajendravarman of Chenla. He was the son of her brother. Together, they had a daughter named Jayendrabhā. When Nrpendradevi's reign ended, her daughter Jayendrabhā became the next queen of Sambhupura.
