nUbuntu (short for Network Ubuntu) was a special version of the Ubuntu computer operating system. It was created to help people test the security of computer networks and servers. Think of it like a toolkit for finding weak spots in computer systems to make them safer.
The main goal of nUbuntu was to combine Ubuntu's easy-to-use design with many popular tools for checking computer security. Besides being used for network and server testing, nUbuntu was also meant to be a desktop system for people who were very good with Linux computers.
What Was Inside nUbuntu?
nUbuntu used a lightweight program called Fluxbox. This program helped manage how windows looked and worked on the computer screen. It was chosen because it was simple and didn't use a lot of computer power.
This special operating system also came with many useful security programs. Some of these included:
- Wireshark: A tool to look at network traffic, like watching all the data moving across a network.
- nmap: A program used to discover devices on a network and find out what services they are running.
- dSniff: A collection of tools for network auditing and penetration testing.
- Ettercap: A tool used for "man-in-the-middle" attacks, which helps test network security.
The Story of nUbuntu
The nUbuntu project started in late 2005. Developers worked to create different versions of this security-focused operating system.
- 2005-12-18: The nUbuntu project began, and the first testing version was released.
- 2006-01-16: The developers released "Stable 1," which was the first steady version of nUbuntu Live.
- 2006-06-26: Version 6.06 of nUbuntu Live was released.
- 2006-10-16: nUbuntu was featured in a Japanese magazine called Hacker Japan. This magazine was about computer security.
- 2006-11-21: Version 6.10 of nUbuntu Live became available.
Sadly, as of April 4, 2010, the official website for nUbuntu closed down. No reason was given for why the project stopped.
