Nagarote (pronounced na-ga-RO-te) is a town and a municipality in the León Department of Nicaragua. It is located about 42 kilometers (26 miles) from Managua, the capital city of Nicaragua.
The town of Nagarote has a population of about 25,827 people. The rural areas around it have about 13,437 people. This makes Nagarote an important place in its region.

History of Nagarote
Nagarote once had a busy seaport called Puerto Sandino. This port was very important for trade and travel. In 1983, the port was damaged. After this, it was no longer used for shipping.

Nagarote's Economy
The economy of Nagarote mainly depends on farming and raising cattle. The land here is very fertile, which means it's great for growing crops. Farmers grow things like soybeans, cotton, peanuts, corn, vegetables, and tobacco. Salt is also produced in the municipality.
Natural Attractions
Nagarote is famous for its beautiful natural places. It has a long coastline, stretching about 24 kilometers (15 miles). Along this coast, you can find wide, open beaches with sparkling waters.
Xolotlán Lake is another popular spot, especially during the summer. Many people visit the lake to enjoy the water and the scenery. Nagarote is known for having some of the best beaches in Nicaragua.
Historical Places to Visit
Besides its natural beauty, Nagarote also has interesting historical sites. One important place is the Paochial Temple of Nagarote. This amazing building was made a National Monument in December 1955. It was built in 1575, showing the typical style of that time. The temple is valued for its history and grand appearance.
Another well-known attraction is the famous tree of Nagarote. This very old tree has been alive for about 950 years! It's a remarkable natural landmark that has stayed in the city as it grew. A park has been created around the tree for everyone to enjoy.
Festivals and Celebrations
At the end of July each year, Nagarote celebrates its patron saint, Santiago Apostle. The celebrations start on July 24 with exciting bullfights, fun games, and lively dancing. July 26 is known as Santa Ana day, which is also part of the festivities. The celebrations usually end on July 28.
International Connections
Sister Cities
Nagarote has a special connection with Norwalk, Connecticut in the United States. They are called "sister cities." This partnership helps both communities grow and learn from each other. It is part of a project called the Norwalk/Nagarote Sister City Project. This project connects six communities in the U.S. with six in Nicaragua.
