The Nahma and Northern Railway Locomotive #5 is a special old train engine. You can find it on display in Nahma Township, Michigan, at the corner of Main Street and River Street. It's a cool piece of history from when trains were super important for moving things around!

A Bit of History About This Train

The town of Nahma was started in 1881 by a company called the Bay De Noquet Lumber Company. They built the town to help them cut down trees and move logs in northern Michigan.

At first, the company cut down softer trees. But when those trees became harder to find, they started cutting down harder trees instead. To move these heavy logs, the company began building a railroad system in 1901.

This railroad was called the Nahma and Northern. It stretched from Nahma deep into the forests and to different logging camps. Eventually, the railway had about 75 miles of track! The Nahma and Northern had seven train engines, one caboose, and over 100 special cars called Russell Cars to carry timber.

The railroad stopped being used in 1948. A few years later, in 1951, the town of Nahma was sold. The new owners wanted to turn it into a resort, but that plan never quite worked out.

What Kind of Train Is It?

This locomotive is a 2-6-2 coal-burning train engine. This means it has two small wheels at the front, six big driving wheels in the middle, and two more small wheels at the back. It uses coal to create steam, which makes it move!

The train was built in 1912 by the Baldwin Company in Philadelphia. They were famous for making many trains back then.
