What is Naisasialiitto Unioni?
How it Started
Naisasialiitto Unioni was started by three important women: Lucina Hagman, Maikki Friberg, and Venny Soldan-Brofeldt. When the group first began, they focused on several key issues.
Early Goals
- They worked hard for women's right to vote. Finnish women gained this right in 1906.
- They also wanted equal pay for women. This means women should earn the same money as men for doing the same job.
- Improving education for girls and women was another big goal.
- They also worked to protect women and girls from exploitation.
What They Do Today
Today, Naisasialiitto Unioni continues its important work.
- They try to make women's lives better in society.
- They also work to get more women involved in politics.
- The group influences discussions about laws and policies.
- They keep working to improve women's rights.
- They also fight against any unfair treatment of women.
Membership Numbers
Compared to similar groups in other countries, Naisasialiitto Unioni had fewer members. For example, in the early 1900s, it had less than 2,000 members. At the same time, a Finnish group that worked against alcohol had about 20,000 women members. Also, almost as many women were part of the women workers' movement.
