Nakagawa Hidenari (中川秀成) (1570 – September 9, 1612) was a Japanese daimyō. A daimyō was a powerful feudal lord in old Japan. He lived during a time when Japan was moving from the Azuchi–Momoyama period to the Edo period. Hidenari was the second son of a lord named Nakagawa Kiyohide.

Becoming a Leader

In 1582, Nakagawa Hidenari's father, Kiyohide, died. This happened during a battle called the Battle of Shizugatake. After his father's death, Hidenari's older brother, Nakagawa Hidemasa, became the new head of their family.

However, Hidemasa died young in 1592. Because of this, Hidenari then took over as the family leader. He also became the lord of their lands, known as a domain.

Serving a Powerful Ruler

Hidenari was a loyal servant to a very powerful leader named Toyotomi Hideyoshi. Because of his good service, Hideyoshi moved Hidenari to a new area. This new place was called the Oka Domain, located in Bungo Province.

Moving to this new domain was a good thing for Hidenari. His income increased a lot. It went from 66,000 koku to 74,000 koku. A koku was a measure of rice, which showed how wealthy and powerful a lord was.

Joining the Korean Campaign

In 1597, Nakagawa Hidenari took part in a big military action. This was the invasion of Korea. He fought alongside another important general named Tōdō Takatora.

The Battle of Sekigahara

In 1600, a very important battle happened in Japan. This was the Battle of Sekigahara. This battle decided who would rule Japan. Hidenari chose to join the "eastern army." This army was led by Tokugawa Ieyasu.

Hidenari and his forces attacked and defeated Ōta Kazuyoshi. This happened at a place called Usuki Castle. Because Hidenari sided with the winning army, Tokugawa Ieyasu let him keep his domain. Hidenari's lands were not taken away, and he continued to be a powerful lord.
