Nalapanima facts for kids
Nalapanima is a special musical play from Nepal. It's also known as a Geeti Natak, which means a musical drama. This play tells an exciting story about a brave Nepalese soldier. It shows his strong love for his country, called patriotism. The story takes place during a real historical event: the Battle of Nalapani in 1814. This battle was part of the Anglo-Nepalese War, and a famous leader named Balbhadra Kunwar led the Nepalese soldiers. The words for the songs were written by Bala Krishna ‘Sama’, and the music was created by Shiva Shankar.
The Story Behind the Play
The play's story is about a Nepalese soldier who gets hurt during the battle. He needs help and finds it from the British camp. Even though the British soldiers are his enemies, they help him because they are kind. The Nepalese soldier is very thankful for their help.
However, the British then ask him to join their army. This was during a time often called the Gurkha War. Even though he is grateful, the soldier bravely says no. He refuses to fight against his own country. This part of the story shows his strong loyalty and love for Nepal.
Bringing the Play to Life
Nalapanima was first performed at the Rastriya Nachghar in Nepal. This is a famous place for plays and performances. After some years, the play was updated and staged again. Deepak Jangam re-edited it to make it fresh for new audiences.
The music in the show is a mix of old and new styles. It uses traditional Nepalese folk music, which has been around for a long time. It also includes more modern music. This blend makes the songs unique and interesting. The play's album also has some duet songs. These are songs sung by two people.
