Nama demissum is a small flowering plant. It is known by the common names purplemat or purple mat. This plant is an annual plant, which means it lives for only one year.

Where Purplemat Grows

Purplemat loves dry, sunny places. You can find it in the southwestern deserts of America. This includes areas like the Mojave Desert. It also grows in parts of Mexico.

This plant prefers sandy or rocky ground. You'll often see it where creosote bush plants grow. It can live at elevations from about 2,000 to 5,500 feet high.

What Purplemat Looks Like

This plant is quite small. It usually grows only up to three inches tall. It forms a little patch on the ground. Its stems and leaves are a bit hairy.

The flowers of Nama demissum are very pretty. They can be pink or purple. You can see these flowers blooming from February to May.

Different Kinds of Purplemat

Just like there can be different types of apples, there are also different types, or "varieties," of purplemat. These varieties are slightly different versions of the same plant.

Here are the two main varieties:

  • Nama demissum var. covillei Brand—This one is called Coville's purplemat.
  • Nama demissum var. demissum Gray—This is the more common purple mat or purplemat.
