Nana Sahib (born Dhondu Pant on May 19, 1824 – died 1859) was an important leader in India. He was a Peshwa, which was like a prime minister or chief minister in the Maratha Empire. This empire was a powerful group of states in India.

Nana Sahib was known as a brave fighter and a respected person. He led a big uprising in a city called Cawnpore (now known as Kanpur). This happened during the Indian Rebellion of 1857, which was a major fight against British rule in India.

Nana Sahib was the adopted son of Baji Rao II. Baji Rao II was the last Peshwa and had been sent away from his home. Nana Sahib believed he should receive money from the English East India Company, but there were disagreements about this. After his forces were defeated by the British, he disappeared. He went to the Nepal Hills in 1859, where he later died.

Nana Sahib's Role in the 1857 Uprising

Nana Sahib gained the trust of Charles Hillersdon, who was a British official in Kanpur. They had a plan: Nana Sahib would gather 1,500 soldiers. These soldiers would help the British if the rebellion spread to Cawnpore.

Joining the Rebellion

On June 6, 1857, the rebellion reached Cawnpore. British soldiers and officials from the East India Company had to hide in a fortified area. During this confusing time, Nana Sahib and his soldiers went to the British storage area in the northern part of the city.

However, once he was inside, Nana Sahib made a big announcement. He said he was joining the rebellion against the Company. He also declared that he would support Bahadur Shah II, who was seen as the leader of the rebellion.

Taking Control of Cawnpore

After taking money from the Company's treasury, Nana Sahib moved along a main road called the Grand Trunk Road. He said he wanted to bring back the Maratha confederacy. This was a group of Maratha states that had been very powerful under the Peshwa tradition. He decided to capture Cawnpore.

On his way, Nana Sahib met some rebel soldiers from the Company. These soldiers were heading to Delhi to meet Bahadur Shah II. Nana Sahib wanted them to return to Cawnpore. He asked them to help him defeat the British. At first, the soldiers were not sure. But they decided to join Nana Sahib when he made them a promise. He said he would double their pay and give them gold if they destroyed the British fort.
