Nanette Newman (born May 29, 1934) is an English actress and author. She has appeared in many films, including several directed by her husband, Bryan Forbes. Some of her well-known films include Séance on a Wet Afternoon (1964), The Whisperers (1967), The Stepford Wives (1975), and International Velvet (1978). For International Velvet, she won the Evening Standard Film Award for Best Actress. She was also nominated for a BAFTA Award for Best Actress for her role in The Raging Moon (1971).

Early Life and Education

Nanette Newman was born in Northampton, England. Her parents were involved in show business. Her father was known as a strongman in the circus. In the 1940s, she lived in Streatham Hill, London.

She attended Sternhold College and then studied acting. She went to the Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts and the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. These are famous schools for performing arts.

Acting Career

Nanette Newman first appeared on screen when she was 11 years old. This was in a short film called Here We Come Gathering: A Story of the Kentish Orchards in 1945. Her first full-length movie role was as a teenager in Personal Affair (1953).

She played many different characters throughout her career. These included a heroine in The Wrong Box (1966) and a young woman in a wheelchair in The Raging Moon (1971). She also appeared in the TV series Sir Francis Drake in 1962. She was also a guest star in an episode of The Saint (TV series).

Working with Bryan Forbes

Nanette Newman married actor, writer, and director Bryan Forbes in 1955. She often acted in his films. They even acted together in The League of Gentlemen (1960). She appeared in most of the movies he directed. These included The L-Shaped Room (1962), Seance on a Wet Afternoon (1964), The Whisperers (1967), and International Velvet (1978).

Other Appearances and Writing

Beyond films, Newman was also famous for appearing in television advertisements. She was known for her commercials for Fairy Liquid, a dish soap. She was also a regular guest on the BBC game show What's My Line? in the 1970s. In the 1980s, she starred in the ITV comedy show Let There Be Love.

Nanette Newman is also a successful author. She has written thirty books for children. She has also written six cookbooks. Her book The Summer Cookbook won a Cookbook of the Year Award. She even hosted a children's cooking show called Fun Food Factory in 1976. She also cooked on the TV show TV-am in the 1980s.

Personal Life

Nanette Newman met Bryan Forbes in February 1953. They met while he was filming Wheel of Fate. She was still a student at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art at the time. They married on August 27, 1955.

They had two daughters, Emma Forbes and Sarah Standing. Nanette and Bryan were married for 57 years. Bryan Forbes passed away in 2013. Nanette Newman has shared that one reason their marriage lasted so long was Bryan's rule. He always took his family with him if he worked overseas for more than two weeks.
