Nanne's Music Journey
Early Days and Sound of Music
Nanne Grönvall started her music journey in the 1980s with a group called Sound of Music. They tried twice to represent Sweden in the Eurovision Song Contest at Melodifestivalen. They finished fourth both times, in 1986 and 1987.
Over the next ten years, Nanne became known for writing songs for Melodifestivalen. She wrote two songs for the 1992 contest. In 1995, she wrote "Det vackraste" ("The Most Beautiful Thing"). This song came in second place and was sung by Cecilia Vennersten.
One More Time and Eurovision Success
From 1991 to 1997, Nanne was a member of the group One More Time. She was in the band with her husband, Peter Grönvall, and Maria Rådsten.
In 1996, One More Time won the Melodifestivalen final with their folk-style song "Den vilda". This song was also recorded in English as "The Wilderness Mistress". They then represented Sweden at the Eurovision Song Contest 1996. They did very well, finishing third out of 23 countries.
Starting a Solo Career
After One More Time's last album in 1997, Nanne started her solo career. In 1998, she returned to Melodifestivalen with her song "Avundsjuk" ("Envious"). This song was a funny take on being jealous of successful people. She wore a purple wig and special ears for her performance! The judges placed her song fourth.
In 2001, Nanne tried to represent the United Kingdom in Eurovision. She sang "Men" in their selection show, but finished last. She came back to Melodifestivalen in 2003 with "Evig kärlek" ("Eternal Love"). This song was a unique mix of opera and techno music. However, it did not make it to the final.
Håll om mig and Big Success
In 2005, Nanne performed at Melodifestivalen for the sixth time. She sang "Håll om mig" ("Embrace me"), a song she co-wrote. Even though it was first turned down, it was chosen as a special "wildcard" entry. This was because there weren't many female songwriters in the competition that year.
Nanne performed the song in a semi-final and easily made it to the final. Many people thought it would win. It came in third with the regional judges. But it won the national public vote by a huge amount! It ended up just three points behind the overall winner. "Håll om mig" became a number one hit in Sweden for two weeks. It sold over 10,000 copies, earning a gold record.
In 2006, Nanne had to cancel her tour due to a health issue. She recovered fully a few months later.
Recent Melodifestivalen Appearances
Nanne entered Melodifestivalen again in 2007 with "Jag måste kyssa dig" ("I Must Kiss You"). She wrote this song herself. She finished third in her semi-final, moving to the "second chance" round. However, she was eliminated in that round.
In 2015, Nanne competed as a celebrity dancer in a TV show called Let's Dance 2015. She also took part in Melodifestivalen 2020 with her song "Carpool Karaoke". She also wrote a song for another artist in the same competition. "Carpool Karaoke" did not make it past its semi-final.
Musicals and Theatre Roles
Nanne has also performed in many musicals and plays. She has played leading roles in famous shows like Sweet Charity and Annie. She also played Miss Danvers in the German musical Rebecca.
Nanne has been nominated for the Guldmasken award, which is like the Swedish Tony award. She was nominated for her roles in Sweet Charity and her first musical, "How To Succeed in Business Without Really Trying". She has also done voice acting for many cartoon movies and TV shows.
Composer for Music and Movies
Nanne has written or co-written many songs that have sold very well, earning gold and platinum records. These songs have been recorded by her own groups, as a solo artist, or by other singers. She has also written theme songs for movies.
Hit Songs and Awards
The song "Highland" by her group One More Time became a hit across Europe in 1994. It also sold gold in South Africa. In 2010, the band Blackmore's Night recorded "Highland" and made a music video for it. Nanne co-wrote "Highland" with Peter Grönvall.
In 1995, Peter Grönvall, Nanne, and Maria Rådsten wrote "Det vackraste". This song was sung by Cecilia Vennersten. It was the first Swedish Song Contest song to win a Grammy Award for "song of the year". It sold gold and platinum in both Sweden and Norway. One More Time also released an English version called "Living in a Dream" in 1997.
Nanne and Peter Grönvall also wrote movie theme songs. These include "De Hjältemodiga" (1996) and "Vår Vitaste Ros" (1997). These songs were for movies based on the Swedish author Astrid Lindgren's Kalle Blomquist books.
She is also one of the writers of the hit song "I Do". This song was performed by Arvingarna in Melodifestivalen in 2019. It later earned a gold record and won the Guldklaven (Goldclef) Award for "Song of the Year".
Radio and TV Host
Nanne has hosted many radio and TV shows. She had her own radio show called "Nanne i P4". Many Swedish stars were guests on her show. In 2011, she even broadcast her show live from the Sweden Rock Festival. She also got to interview the famous musician Ozzy Osbourne at the festival.
