The Nantucket Shipwreck & Lifesaving Museum

This museum is run by the Egan Maritime Institute. It is located at 158 Polpis Road on Nantucket. This spot is about three miles east of the main town, which is about a 20-minute drive. The museum building itself looks like the old lifesaving stations from long ago. It sits right next to a marsh called Folger's Marsh.

What Can You See There?

The museum has more than 5,000 items! These objects and memories come from shipwrecks that happened over the last 300 years. You can see many interesting things, like:

  • Old surfboats, which were special boats used to rescue people from the water.
  • Beach carts, used to carry equipment along the shore.
  • Huge Fresnel lenses from famous lighthouses like Brant Point and Great Point lights. These lenses helped ships see the light from far away.
  • Old photographs that show what life was like for sailors and rescuers.
  • Models of lifesaving stations that were all around Nantucket island.
  • Models of ships that sadly wrecked in the past.

The museum also has special programs. You can watch films and videos about big storms at sea. These storms caused more than 700 shipwrecks around Nantucket! You can also listen to lectures that tell amazing stories of survival and rescue.
