Naomi Jochnowitz studied at Harvard University. She earned her Ph.D. in 1976. A Ph.D. is a very high university degree. Her main research project was called a dissertation. It was titled Congruences Between Modular Forms and Implications for the Hecke Algebra. Her professor, Barry Mazur, helped her with this important work.

Helping Students at Rochester

At the University of Rochester, Professor Jochnowitz is well-known for being a great mentor. She is very enthusiastic and supportive of students. She especially helps new students get involved in the mathematics program. Because of her encouragement, many more students decided to study math. The number of math students at the university tripled between 1999 and 2002.

Awards and Recognition

In 2016, Professor Jochnowitz received a special award. It was the M. Gweneth Humphreys Award from the Association for Women in Mathematics. She won this award because she is an excellent mentor to math students. She is especially good at guiding women who study mathematics.

She was also a finalist for the "W" Award from the Rochester Women's Network. This award also recognized her work in mentoring women in math.
