M. Gweneth Humphreys Award facts for kids
The M. Gweneth Humphreys Award, also called the Humphreys Award, is a special prize in mathematics. It was created by the Association for Women in Mathematics. This award celebrates math teachers and professors who are amazing mentors. A mentor is someone who guides and helps students learn and grow.
The award is named after Mabel Gweneth Humphreys (1911-2006). She was a brilliant mathematician who earned her Ph.D. (the highest university degree) when she was just 23 years old, back in 1935, from the University of Chicago. Mabel Gweneth Humphreys spent her whole career teaching mathematics to women. She taught at Mount St. Scholastica College, then at Sophie Newcomb College, and for over thirty years at Randolph Macon Woman's College. Her former students and colleagues helped fund this award. It honors her strong dedication to helping college students learn and love math.
