Deanna Haunsperger, born in 1964, is an American mathematician. She is a Professor of Mathematics at Carleton College.

She was the president of the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) from 2017 to 2018. She also helped create and organize a special summer math program for women at Carleton College. This program ran every summer from 1995 to 2014.

Her Journey in Education

Deanna Haunsperger studied hard to become a mathematician.

Early Studies

She earned her first degree in mathematics and computer science in 1986. This was from Simpson College.

Advanced Degrees

She continued her studies at Northwestern University. There, she earned her Masters degree in mathematics in 1989. She then received her Ph.D. in mathematics in 1991. Her Ph.D. paper was about "Projection and Aggregation Paradoxes in Nonparametrical Statistical Tests." Her advisor was Donald Gene Saari.

Her Career in Mathematics

Deanna Haunsperger has dedicated her career to teaching and promoting mathematics.

Teaching Positions

From 1991 to 1994, she was an assistant professor at St. Olaf College. Since 1994, she has been a faculty member at Carleton College. She teaches in the mathematics department there.

Supporting Women in Math

From 1995 to 2014, Haunsperger led the Carleton College Summer Mathematics Program for Women. This program helped college women get ready to pursue a Ph.D. in mathematics. It encouraged more women to study advanced math.

Awards and Special Recognition

Deanna Haunsperger has received many awards for her work in mathematics.

Editor of Math Horizons

From 1999 to 2003, Haunsperger was a co-editor for Math Horizons. This is a magazine for college students interested in math.

Leadership in the MAA

She served as the second vice-president of the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) from 2006 to 2008. She was later elected president of the MAA for the 2017–2018 term. This is a very important role in the math community.

Awards for Mentorship

Haunsperger has won several awards from the Association for Women in Mathematics (AWM). In 2012, she received the M. Gweneth Humphreys Award. This award honors math educators who are great mentors. A mentor is someone who guides and supports others. She also received the second annual AWM Presidential Award in 2017. In the same year, she was chosen as a fellow of the AWM.
