The Napa Valley Register is a newspaper that shares daily news in Napa, California. It has been an important source of information for the community since it first started in 1863.

The Story of the Napa Valley Register

How the Newspaper Started

The Napa Valley Register began printing on August 10, 1863. A year later, in 1864, the newspaper changed its name to just the Napa Register. It kept this shorter name for over 100 years before going back to its original name. In 1872, the Register started publishing every day, becoming a daily newspaper.

Changes in Ownership

In 1878, a person named George M. Francis became the only owner of the Register. After he passed away, his son, George H. Francis, took over in 1932. The Francis family owned the paper with different partners until 1958.

Then, the newspaper was sold to a company called Scripps League Newspapers. Later, in 1996, another company named Pulitzer bought Scripps. Finally, in 2005, Lee Enterprises bought Pulitzer, which meant they then owned the Napa Valley Register.

In September 2024, the company that publishes the paper, Napa Valley Publishing, was sold by Lee Enterprises to a new owner, Hoffmann Media Group.

The Newspaper Today

As of 2022, the editor of the Napa Valley Register is Dan Evans. Napa Valley Publishing, the company that prints the Register, also publishes other local newspapers. These include the St. Helena Star, The Weekly Calistogan, and American Canyon Eagle. They also run a website called Inside Napa Valley.

In October 2022, Mr. Evans created a new group of people called an editorial board. This board includes three staff members from the newspaper and seven people from the local community. Their job is to help decide the official opinions and viewpoints that the newspaper shares with its readers.

In April 2023, the newspaper had to let go of two employees. Also, starting July 18, 2023, the printed newspaper began to be delivered only three days a week: Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. Instead of being delivered by a newspaper carrier, it now comes through the mail by the U.S. Postal Service.
