A Look Back in Time
How Napoleon Got Its Name
This community was started in the early 1820s. It was named after a very famous French leader, Napoléon Bonaparte. He was a powerful emperor who lived a long time ago.
Life and Work in the Past
By the 1870s, Napoleon had a few important businesses. There was a sawmill, which cut wood for building. A gristmill ground grain into flour. People could also visit a tavern, which was like a restaurant or inn. There were also three stores where people could buy things they needed.
The Post Office Closes
Later, in 1912, the post office in Napoleon closed down. This meant people had to go to another nearby town to send or receive mail.
