Narcisso is a ghost town in Texas, United States. It's located in the southwestern part of Cottle County. This town was started in the early 1900s. But by 1940, everyone had left it.
The Story of Narcisso
How the Town Started
In the early 1900s, a group called the Narcisso Townsite Company wanted to build a new town. They chose a spot west of Paducah, Texas. This location was picked because a railroad, the Quanah, Acme and Pacific Railway, was being built nearby. The company hoped the town would become a stop on this important railway line.
The company planned out ten roads for the new town. Some of these roads had interesting names like Dip, Dougie, Acme, Hookie, and Houdin. The name Narcisso was chosen by Sam Lazarus. He was a property developer from St. Louis who was involved in the project.
Why Narcisso Became a Ghost Town
The railroad did build some things in Narcisso. They set up a platform for cotton, a small train station, a tool shed, and a house for the section foreman. These were important for the railway's operations.
However, the Narcisso Townsite Company had trouble selling the other land. They couldn't sell lots for businesses or homes. Because of this, they eventually started selling the land in bigger pieces for farming.
Narcisso didn't turn out to be the successful town its founders hoped for. By 1940, no one lived there anymore. It became a true ghost town. By the 1980s, Narcisso no longer appeared on maps.
