History of Naresuan University
The idea for this university began on January 18, 1964. The Ministry of Education decided to open branches of Bangkok's College of Education in different parts of Thailand. On January 25, 1967, the Phitsanulok campus was opened. It was the fourth branch and was meant to help students in the northern provinces.
In 1974, the College of Education became a full university. It was named Srinakharinwirot University. At first, the Phitsanulok campus only offered the third and fourth years of university study. Students had to pass a test after finishing their teacher training college courses. In 1976, the first and second years were added.
Over time, more subjects were offered beyond just education. By 1990, the Phitsanulok campus became its own independent university. It was named "Naresuan University" during the celebrations for King Naresuan the Great.
Naresuan University also had another campus in Phayao. This campus opened in 1999. In 2010, it became its own university called "University of Phayao". Naresuan University also offers courses in other places, including Bangkok.
