Naresuan University (NU) is a public university located in Phitsanulok Province, northern Thailand. It was officially started on July 29, 1990. This date marked 400 years since King Naresuan the Great began his rule. King Naresuan was born in Phitsanulok.

On the university campus, there is a special courtyard with a statue of King Naresuan. Students often visit this statue to show their respect. The university is quite large, with about 20,000 full-time students.

University History: How NU Began

On January 18, 1964, Thailand's Ministry of Education decided to create new branches of the College of Education. These branches would be in different parts of the country. On January 25, 1967, the Phitsanulok campus was opened. It was the fourth branch of the College of Education. Its main goal was to serve students in Thailand's northern provinces.

In 1974, the College of Education became a full university. It was then called Srinakharinwirot University. At first, students could only study their third and fourth years at the Phitsanulok campus. They had to pass a test after finishing their first two years at a teacher training college. In 1976, the first and second years of study were added.

Over time, the university started offering more subjects than just education. In 1990, the Phitsanulok campus became its own independent university. It was named "Naresuan University" to celebrate the 400th anniversary of King Naresuan the Great becoming king.
