University History: How NU Began
On January 18, 1964, Thailand's Ministry of Education decided to create new branches of the College of Education. These branches would be in different parts of the country. On January 25, 1967, the Phitsanulok campus was opened. It was the fourth branch of the College of Education. Its main goal was to serve students in Thailand's northern provinces.
In 1974, the College of Education became a full university. It was then called Srinakharinwirot University. At first, students could only study their third and fourth years at the Phitsanulok campus. They had to pass a test after finishing their first two years at a teacher training college. In 1976, the first and second years of study were added.
Over time, the university started offering more subjects than just education. In 1990, the Phitsanulok campus became its own independent university. It was named "Naresuan University" to celebrate the 400th anniversary of King Naresuan the Great becoming king.
Naresuan University also had another campus in Phayao. This campus opened in 1999. In 2010, it became its own university, called "University of Phayao". Naresuan University also offers special courses in nine other places across the country, including Bangkok.
University Rankings: How NU Compares
