History of UTAR
How UTAR Began
In July 2001, a political party called the Malaysian Chinese Association (MCA) was asked to start a university. Ling Liong Sik, who was the President of MCA, led a team to plan the new university. Another team helped get the necessary approvals. This team included Ng Lay Swee, who was the Principal of Tunku Abdul Rahman University College.
The university opened its doors in June 2002. Its first campus was in Petaling Jaya. It used a building that used to belong to a newspaper.
Early Programs and Growth
UTAR started with three main faculties. These were like different schools within the university. They offered eight different degree programs. The Faculty of Accountancy and Management quickly grew. It had over 6,000 students.
The official launch of UTAR happened on August 13, 2002. The fourth Prime Minister of Malaysia, Mahathir Mohamad, attended the ceremony. He also helped start the building of the new campus in Kampar.
Over time, UTAR changed its campus locations. The campuses in Petaling Jaya and Kuala Lumpur were combined. They moved to the Sungai Long campus in June 2015.
University Leadership
Ng Lay Swee was the first President of UTAR. She retired on March 31, 2008. Chuah Hean Teik became the new President after her. He retired on August 31, 2019. Ewe Hong Tat then took over as President on September 1, 2019.
