The narrow-lobed glider (scientific name: Tramea stenoloba) is a type of dragonfly. Dragonflies are amazing insects known for their bright colors and speedy flight! You can find this particular dragonfly in places like the Cocos Islands, the Lesser Sunda Islands, the Java Sea, and Australia. It was first described in 1962 by a scientist named Tony Watson.

What Does It Look Like?

The narrow-lobed glider is a medium to large dragonfly. Its wings can spread up to 100 millimeters (about 4 inches) wide. The dragonfly itself is about 55 millimeters (just over 2 inches) long.

Most of its body, especially the part where its wings and legs are attached (called the synthorax), is a bright red color. You might also notice dark spots at the base of its back wings. Its main body, called the abdomen, is also red. However, the last two parts of its abdomen are black. Female narrow-lobed gliders look a bit different. They are usually a duller brown color instead of bright red. This dragonfly looks very similar to another type of glider called the Tramea loewii.

Where Does It Live?

The narrow-lobed glider lives near water. You can often find it around river lagoons, lakes, and ponds. In Australia, this dragonfly is found in many places. It lives across most of the continent, except for the very far south-east. It might not be as common as some other dragonflies. Scientists keep track of where animals are found. Records show fewer sightings of the narrow-lobed glider compared to the Tramea loewii.
